VIDEO AND PERFORMANCE
Maya Roussell is a mixed-media creator, storyteller and time traveler. They received their BA in Theater Design with a minor in Art, Technology and Multimedia at Willamette University and is currently working toward an MFA in Film, Video, New Media and Animation at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. Pulling from their background in theater design, projection mapping and video design for the stage, their work in visual arts is heavily informed by their fascination with time-based experiences, immediacy, and the realms of the ethereal. As a queer, mixed-race person of Louisiana Creole heritage, their work often deals with intergenerational memory and personal history. In their practice, Roussell strives to collapse liniar conceptions of time to create spaces of memorial, reflection, persistence and healing in the shadows of systemic erasure and the teachings of our ancestors. Their work often invites live collaboration from their viewers as a way to foster active, critical engagement and to inspire empathy.
